Uncategorized

About Course

Certification De-escalation & Restraint Training Learning Modules provide participants with research and evidence-based techniques for use in de-escalating escalated students while maintaining a safe environment. Participants will acquire the knowledge needed to identify situations that may require physical restraint (emergency situations where immediate danger exists) from situations when restraint should be avoided (forced compliance or convenience). Participants will learn easily mastered physical restraint and escape techniques that do not restrict the airway and may be used to prevent students from hurting school staff, other students, or themselves.

Course Content

Getting Started
This module is designed for school trainers who have completed in person certification in 2024. It's purpose is to serve as a reveiw of the CRT program.

Module 1: Focus Points, STAR Approach, & FAQs
In this module you will learn about CRT Procedures, CRT Focus Points, the Crisis Cycle/STAR Approach, and Restraint Frequently asked Questions.

Section 2: Federal Guidelines
This section will briefly discuss Federal Guidelines with which participants should be familiar.

Section 3: Restraint Videos
In this section, we will view real-life videos of restraint that has resulted in legal action. Think about ways that restraint could have been avoided and how the educators' actions correlate to restraint guidelines. Refer to pages 11-12 in the Instructor Guide as you watch each video.

Module 4: Supporting Individuals with Challenging Behaviors
In this module, we will discuss reasons why our students may display difficult behaviors, Hardwired vs. Learned Emotions, Dysregulated Behaviors, and strategies for working with dysregulated individuals. Many of the ideas presented in this module come from the research of behavior specialists. For more in-depth study, see the bibliography of resources included at the end of the Participant Manual.

Module 5: Scenarios
In this module, we will discuss scenarios you can use when you redeliver the program. It is suggested that you select two or three of the scenarios that most closely align to the needs of your organization for redelivery.

Module 6: Stress/Anger
In this module you will learn about the Common Causes of Stress, Non-Verbal Communication of Stress or Anger, Verbal Communication of Stress or Anger, Stress Stimuli, and the Types of Stress.

Module 7: De-Escalation & Safety
This module will cover Verbal De-escalation, Non-Verbal De-escalation, Personal Safety During De-escalation, De-escalation and Safety Steps, and De-escalation Strategies.

Module 8: Restraint & Escape
This module will cover Restraint Points of Emphasis, Restraint Release, and Post-Restraint Best Practices.

Technique Videos
Now that you have a good understanding of safety and restraint guidelines, it's time to learn and practice hands-on techniques. You will want to practice with another individual. View the videos as many times as necessary in order to master the techniques. Eventually, you will become fluid at the techniques as you obtain muscle memory. If you are participating in this course for certification, remember to schedule your Zoom meeting when you are comfortable with the techniques.

Program Redelivery Tips
This module includes tips for redelivery of the program. A valid Certified De-escalation and Restraint Training "Train-the-Trainer" certification is required in order to redeliver the program within your organization.

I enjoyed the convenience of the online module. It allowed me to go at my own pace and look things over again if I needed to. Thanks for putting this together, it was a great supplement to the in-person training I took last year.
